MariaDB is again facing scrutiny over whether Galera’s future will remain fully open source as support for MySQL Galera Cluster ends on 30 September. The company says Galera remains a core open-source part of MariaDB Community Server, but observers are concerned that its former Codership team is now developing separate enterprise replication technology that is not currently intended to be open source.

MariaDB acquired Galera creator Codership in May 2025 and reversed an earlier plan to remove Galera libraries from Community Server 12.3 after community criticism. MariaDB is urging MySQL Galera users to migrate to MariaDB Galera Cluster, while Percona argues that this is not a simple replacement because the two databases have diverged substantially. Percona offers its open-source XtraDB Cluster as an alternative for users wishing to stay on MySQL, though MariaDB Foundation representatives warn that this leaves them more reliant on Oracle’s direction for MySQL.
