## Summary

Martha MacCallum describes her forthcoming book, “Book of Valor”, as a chronological account of American courage, from the Mayflower to Afghanistan. She says its stories aim to preserve the experiences of those who served and to remind readers of the values and resolve that shaped the country.

The article highlights several examples: Joshua Chamberlain at Gettysburg; Tuskegee Airman Harry Stewart, who shot down three German fighters in one day; and General Patrick Brady, who carried out 5,000 rescue missions in Vietnam. It also recounts how Welles Crowther, a volunteer firefighter working in the World Trade Centre, helped people escape on 11 September 2001, and says five people featured in the book received the Medal of Honor.
