## Key points

- Stewart apologised to Craig Melvin for blaming him in a joke.
- She called her homeless Halloween costume “tone deaf”.
- The deleted photo drew criticism despite her stated intention to raise awareness.

## Summary

Martha Stewart apologised to “Today” host Craig Melvin after linking him to her controversial homeless Halloween costume, saying she had been joking about an earlier chocolate spill. She acknowledged that the costume and her remarks were “tone deaf” and said she had not intended to mock people experiencing homelessness.

Stewart said her grandson first described the costume as tone deaf after she asked what he thought. The outfit showed her in tattered clothes with dirt on her face, holding a sign reading “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!” She had said it was meant to raise awareness of homelessness, an issue she supports charities addressing, but the image drew criticism after she posted and deleted it.
