Marvel Studios has confirmed a third Black Panther film, announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, with Ryan Coogler returning to write and direct for a cinema release on 15 December 2028. The headline reveal is a generational shift in the lead role: David Jonsson, known for The Long Walk, will play T'Challa's son as the new Black Panther, sharing the mantle with Letitia Wright's Shuri. Coogler will shoot the film on large-format celluloid rather than digitally, and it marks the franchise's first new instalment since 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Plot details remain scarce, though the film follows Wakanda Forever's $859 million global box office and its tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman. Coogler had been tied up with other projects, including an X-Files reboot and Sinners, before scheduling allowed production to proceed. Denzel Washington, who hinted in 2024 that Coogler was writing him a role, was not confirmed at the panel, leaving his involvement unclear. Shuri and other Black Panther characters will appear first in Avengers: Doomsday on 18 December, ahead of Black Panther 3's 2028 release.
