Marvel’s Just Officially Killed Off a Main Avenger

Collider · 3 hours ago

Marvel has released a new *What If* one-shot from writer Rainbow Rowell in which the teenage heroes usually known as the Runaways never break away from their villainous parents, instead joining the Pride's evil family business as the "Young Pride". In this alternate timeline, the group's ally Victor Mancha kills Steve Rogers' Captain America and sets his sights on wiping out the Fantastic Four and the rest of the Avengers, making it one of the few instances in Marvel history where the Runaways' absence proves catastrophic for the wider superhero universe.

The comic, illustrated by Zulema Scotto Lavina in a style that echoes original Runaways artist Adrian Alphona, imagines what happens when the Pride's children never discover the truth about their parents' murderous pact with the alien Gibborim and so never rebel. Despite embracing villainy, the Young Pride do not bond as closely as in the main timeline, and small flashes of their original rebellious instincts gradually resurface throughout the story.
