Spider-Man 2 sales climb after Brand New Day film release

Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Insomniac's 2023 open-world action game, has seen a major sales resurgence following the release of the Marvel film Spider-Man: Brand New Day in cinemas on 30th July. Analyst Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics estimates the game has sold 316,000 copies across PC and PlayStation 5 since the film's release, generating roughly $11m (£8.14m) in additional revenue for Sony and pushing daily active users above one million for the first time since launch nearly three years ago. It is another example of how a successful film or TV tie-in can significantly revive interest in an existing game.
Twenty per cent of the copies sold were physical, while many other players opted to access the game via PlayStation Plus's Extra tier rather than buying it outright. PS5 sales during a $30 promotion rose to around 15,000 copies a day, compared with 6,300 daily during a similarly priced sale in February, with Steam sales seeing a comparable boost despite a higher $40 price; a film-inspired in-game costume also helped. Spider-Man 2's lifetime sales now stand at an estimated 18.2 million copies, 92% on PS5, worth over $1.2bn (£888.6m), though Insomniac is now moving on from the franchise to release Marvel's Wolverine on 15th September.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a 2023 video game made by Insomniac Games for PlayStation, built around the Spider-Man characters that also appear in Sony's Marvel films. Games based on popular franchises often see spikes in interest when a related film or show comes out, and this is being reported as one such case, tied to the cinema release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The key players are Insomniac, the studio behind the game, and Sony, which owns both the PlayStation platform and the film rights involved. Industry analysts who track game sales, such as those at firms like Alinea Analytics, are often the source for figures like copies sold or revenue generated, since publishers do not always release these numbers themselves.
This matters because it illustrates how closely linked the games and film industries have become, with a hit movie able to breathe new life into a game that came out years earlier. It also has commercial significance for Sony, which profits from both the film and the game, and for Insomniac as it prepares to release its next major title.
