Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor has revealed that a shared love of the 1986 crime drama River's Edge led to him running up an $800 phone bill trading text quotes from the film with late Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison. The pair bonded over the movie while touring together, and their playful exchange of lines became an expensive habit. The anecdote has resurfaced as Mastodon's new album, Marrow Deep, features a sample from the film on its track Poisonous Weapons.

Dailor said he memorised the entire film, partly because it featured Slayer on its soundtrack and depicted "a bunch of metalheads with no future". He first struck up a friendship with Jordison while Mastodon and Slipknot were touring Europe together with Slayer on the Unholy Alliance tour in the mid-2000s, and the two would swap consecutive lines from the film by text, racking up the hefty bill. Jordison died in 2021.
