Mateta’s Palace dispute deepens after losing appeals to end contract early

The Guardian · 3 hours ago

Jean-Philippe Mateta has lost two separate attempts to have the final year of his Crystal Palace contract declared invalid, after taking his case to an independent Premier League tribunal and to Fifa. The France striker, who has been pushing to leave Selhurst Park, disputed whether the club had validly triggered a 12-month extension option; both bodies rejected his claim, with Fifa ruling it lacked jurisdiction, leaving Palace insisting the deal remains binding.

Mateta joined Palace permanently from Mainz in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year deal with an extension option, which Palace activated in 2024, pushing his expiry to the end of this season. He played in Saturday's defeat at Everton despite the dispute, and is reportedly attracting interest from Aston Villa, who may sell Ollie Watkins to Al-Hilal. A move to Milan collapsed in January after he failed a medical over a knee problem, following which he helped Palace win the Conference League; he faces a potentially frosty reception when Manchester City visit on Friday. Separately, manager Pierre Sage said Ismaïla Sarr, subject of Galatasaray interest, will stay at the club, while Palace also face fresh transfer interest in Adam Wharton and Daniel Muñoz and an injury scare over Chadi Riad.

Crystal Palace is one of England's Premier League football clubs. Jean-Philippe Mateta, a French striker, has been their main forward in recent seasons and helped the club win the Conference League, a European competition. He signed for Palace from German side Mainz in January 2022, and his contract included a clause allowing the club to extend it by a year, which Palace used in 2024.

The dispute centres on whether Palace triggered that extension option correctly. Mateta, who wants to leave the club, argued it was invalid and would have let him walk away as a free agent this summer; Palace maintain the deal is binding until next year. He has now failed to overturn the club's position at two separate bodies, an independent Premier League panel and world football's governing body, Fifa.

This matters because it affects whether Mateta can move to another club and on what terms, at a time when he is reportedly wanted by other sides. It also has knock-on effects for Palace, who must decide whether to sell a key player against his wishes, try to keep him, or manage the situation for the rest of the season while other transfer and injury issues develop around the squad.
