Matt Damon’s $286M Sci-Fi Epic Is Officially One of the Biggest Action Films on Netflix Right Now
Neill Blomkamp's 2013 science-fiction epic *Elysium* has resurfaced as one of Netflix's most-watched action films, drawing renewed attention 13 years after its release. The film marked a hugely ambitious follow-up to Blomkamp's Oscar-nominated debut *District 9*, pairing an A-list cast with a much larger budget to tackle themes of inequality, immigration and healthcare access within a dystopian sci-fi setting.
Set in 2154, the story depicts a stark divide between the wealthy, who live on a pristine orbital space station called Elysium, and the rest of humanity, left to survive on a ravaged, overpopulated Earth. Matt Damon stars as Max, an Earth-dweller who undertakes a dangerous mission that could bridge the gap between the two worlds, while Jodie Foster plays Secretary Delacourt, who is determined to protect Elysium's privileged way of life. Blomkamp wrote, directed and produced the $286 million production himself.
