## Key points

- All five Bourne films are now streaming on Netflix.
- Matt Damon stars in four films; Jeremy Renner leads the spin-off.
- The franchise brought a grittier style to spy action.

## Summary

Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne films offer a darker, more grounded alternative to the glamorous, gadget-filled world of James Bond. Now all five films in the franchise are streaming on Netflix, bringing together a series that helped shift Hollywood spy and action films towards more physical, realistic fights.

The 2002 film The Bourne Identity introduces a former CIA assassin who wakes with amnesia and discovers that his handlers want him dead after a mission goes wrong. Bourne fights with whatever is nearby and is troubled by his own training, in contrast to Bond’s confident embrace of espionage. Four films star Damon; the fifth, The Bourne Legacy, is a spin-off starring Jeremy Renner.
