‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’s Finale Was Always Going To End With That Huge Twist

Collider · 1 month ago

David Gordon Green and David Rosen, the director and creator behind Apple TV's comedic thriller Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, have discussed how the Season 1 finale was designed from the outset to end on a major twist. Speaking to Collider, the pair explained their approach to blending genres and embracing unpredictability throughout the show's ten-episode run, which follows Tatiana Maslany as Paula, a single mother drawn into a deadly blackmail plot involving a sex worker. The finale resolves Paula's custody dispute with her husband Karl, played by Jake Johnson, while deliberately setting up further intrigue for a potential second season.

In the closing moments, Paula receives a call from an unknown number containing footage revealing what actually happened on the night events unfolded in Portland, a cliffhanger clearly intended to tee up future storylines. Green and Rosen also spoke about casting Maslany, whom they described as the ideal choice to capture Paula's blend of vulnerability, volatility and humour, as well as the challenges of filming and using New York City as a backdrop that functions almost like a character in its own right.
