## Key points

- France beat Paraguay 1-0 to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.
- Mbappu00e9's second-half penalty proved decisive in Philadelphia's heat.
- His 19th World Cup goal drew him level with Messi.

## Summary

France reached the World Cup quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Paraguay in a Round of 16 tie played in Philadelphia amid a summer heat wave. The defending champions and pre-tournament favourites struggled to reproduce the fluent attacking football of their earlier matches, instead adopting a more direct, pragmatic approach against a Paraguay side determined to disrupt their rhythm through confrontational, physical play.

Kylian Mbappé settled the contest with a second-half penalty, his seventh goal of the tournament and the 19th World Cup goal of his career, drawing him level with Lionel Messi's overall tally. Paraguay's aggressive tactics drew considerable criticism from broadcasters and pundits, but ultimately proved insufficient against France's greater quality and tournament experience.
