‘Medal guarantee’ Wiffen ready for Commonwealth Games
Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen says his 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medal still motivates him ahead of this year's Games in Glasgow, describing it as the catalyst that launched his swimming career. The Northern Irishman, who has since won Olympic, World and European gold, is aiming for redemption and hopes to claim at least one gold medal, with three his ideal target.
Wiffen will compete in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events as part of Team NI's 15-strong swimming squad, and is regarded as one of the team's strongest medal prospects, jokingly calling himself a "medal guarantee". He won 800m gold and 1500m bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and believes improved support systems for Irish swimmers mean Northern Ireland will surpass its three medals from the 2022 Birmingham Games, which included Wiffen's silver alongside medals from Bethany Firth and Barry McClements.
