Researchers have identified GigaWiper, a malware program that represents a significant escalation in destructive cyber threats. The malicious code is actually an assemblage of multiple malware families stitched together, engineered to cause irreversible damage to computer storage systems through various sophisticated approaches. Microsoft's analysis reveals it can operate at the physical disk level, bypassing traditional file-system protections to achieve its destructive goals.

The malware employs several distinct techniques to eliminate data from infected computers. It can perform secure wiping that repeatedly overwrites storage using different byte patterns, making original content virtually unrecoverable. Alternative methods target physical disk drives by removing partition references and overwriting raw disk content before forcing a system restart. A third approach mimics ransomware encryption but discards the decryption keys instead of demanding payment, ensuring files remain permanently inaccessible. In addition to these destructive capabilities, GigaWiper includes surveillance functionality to monitor user activity on compromised systems.
