Meet Team NI athletes heading to the Commonwealth Games
Northern Ireland has named a 65-athlete team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with competitors selected in eight of the nine sports on the programme. The squad combines established medal contenders with first-time Games athletes, underlining both Northern Ireland’s recent success and its next generation of talent.
– Athletics is led by Kate O'Connor, the world outdoor silver medallist in the heptathlon, who goes to her third Games after winning silver in Birmingham in 2022 and setting a new Irish record of 6,714 points at the 2025 World Championships.
– O'Connor is joined by Anna McCauley in the heptathlon, while Nick Griggs, Callum Morgan and James Gormley are among the track athletes selected for their first Commonwealth Games after strong recent domestic and record-breaking performances.
– Para-athlete Eve Walsh Dann will compete in the 100m and long jump at her second Games, adding further experience to the athletics group.
– Boxing makes up a major part of Team NI with a 12-strong squad, including experienced names and several debutants across men’s and women’s divisions.
– Michaela Walsh, a gold medallist in Birmingham and silver medallist at both Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018, will compete at her fourth Commonwealth Games as one of the team’s most decorated athletes.
– Jude Gallagher will try to retain his title after winning featherweight gold in 2022, while first-time selections include Caitlin Fryers, Louis Rooney, Kaci Rock, Janssen Hill and Jon McConnell.
– Other returning boxers include Nicole Clyde and John Paul Hale, both hoping to improve on their Birmingham performances after early exits in 2022.
– The wider Northern Ireland team also includes sizeable swimming and boxing squads, alongside athletes in cycling, gymnastics, judo, lawn bowls and netball, showing the breadth of the delegation heading to Glasgow.
