Topic Studios, an independent film company founded in 2017 as a division of First Look Media, has emerged as one of the standout players on this year's festival circuit, with three well-received films moving through Telluride, Cannes and Sundance. The studio's rise highlights how independent production outfits, which typically face significant challenges competing against major studios and streamers, can still break through by backing distinctive, filmmaker-driven projects that build word-of-mouth momentum across festivals.

At the Telluride Film Festival, Topic is presenting Jesse Eisenberg's "The Debut", a dramedy starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti and considered one of the festival's hottest tickets, alongside a second showing of Jordan Firstman's "Club Kid" following its warm reception at Cannes in May. Its film "Wicker", which debuted at Sundance in January, is due for release by Black Bear within a month. Speaking to Variety, Topic's film and documentary head Ryan Heller credited the studio's success to prioritising intimate, writer-director-led projects with strong emotional stakes, adding to a track record that already includes acclaimed titles such as "Spencer", "The Climb" and the Oscar-winning "Spotlight".
