Meghan Markle has paid tribute to Gloria Steinem, describing the late feminist icon as her "friend and mentor" after Steinem died aged 92 at her home in New York City. In her first social media post since returning to the UK, the Duchess of Sussex shared three photographs, including a previously unseen image of Prince Archie with Steinem, reflecting on both their public collaborations and a close personal friendship.

The images spanned a 2020 "backyard chat" at Meghan's Montecito home, a framed photo of Steinem with a young Archie during a visit to the Sussexes' California mansion, and a picture from Meghan's trip to New York last year. Meghan recalled shared Thanksgivings, Steinem's counsel during difficult times, and her affection for Archie and Princess Lilibet, alongside a favourite anecdote about Steinem telling a young girl it mattered more that she "knows who SHE is" than recognising her. Steinem, co-founder of Ms Magazine and a leading voice of feminism since the 1960s, was famed for her undercover Playboy bunny exposé and decades of campaigning for women's rights.
