## Key points

- Melania Trump urged Russia and Ukraine to pursue lasting peace.
- A six-day truce enabled aid and the evacuation of nearly 800 people.
- US-brokered talks are expected in Abu Dhabi on 10 and 11 November.

## Summary

Melania Trump has urged Russia and Ukraine to turn a recent local ceasefire into a lasting peace, speaking at a White House meeting with officials from both countries. The White House called it a likely first in US history for a first lady to bring representatives of two nations at war together for diplomacy.

Trump said written agreements made her an “exclusive intermediary” and that she was involved in planning the truce, including reviewing de-mining plans and evacuation routes. The six-day ceasefire in and around Russian-occupied Oleshky enabled aid deliveries and the evacuation of nearly 800 people, while an estimated 2,000 civilians remained in the city. It expired without extension; the White House credited Trump with brokering it, while Pope Leo XIV also urged the sides to allow aid and evacuations. US-brokered talks are expected in Abu Dhabi on 10 and 11 November.
