## Key points

- United are weighing Carrick’s future after an 3-0 defeat.
- The team are 16th, one point above the drop zone.
- Eddie Howe is among the possible replacements.

## Summary

Michael Carrick attended Manchester United’s training ground on Monday as senior executives considered whether to dismiss him after a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth. United have gone eight games without a win and sit 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone, making the decision significant for their season.

Sporting director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada met at Carrington. If Carrick is sacked, Eddie Howe is Wilcox’s preferred candidate and is open to the role, while Unai Emery could cost Aston Villa about £20m in compensation; Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte are also possibilities. Bruno Fernandes was dropped for the Bournemouth match after criticising Carrick’s tactics, then liked an Instagram post about loyalty.
