Michael Lombardi has resigned as general manager of the University of North Carolina's football programme, more than a month after being placed on paid administrative leave during an internal investigation. UNC confirmed the university's Office of University Counsel will continue its probe despite his departure, and will consider "all appropriate corrective actions" once it concludes. The move ends Lombardi's tenure as one of head coach Bill Belichick's most trusted advisers, a role he took on ahead of Belichick's debut season in 2025.

Lombardi's resignation took effect on 3 September 2026. He had been UNC's highest-paid football operations executive, earning an annual salary of $1.5 million, and was among Belichick's first hires after the coach joined the university. The nature of the allegations against Lombardi has not been disclosed; UNC cited confidential personnel matters when the investigation first became public in late July. Belichick's second season got off to a strong start with an upset win over TCU in Ireland, following a 4-8 record in his first campaign at the helm.
