The US Navy is reportedly working to rename an aircraft carrier that had been due to honour Doris Miller, a Black sailor celebrated for his heroism at Pearl Harbor, with two sources telling CNN that discussions have centred on naming it after Donald Trump instead. The move has drawn sharp criticism from veterans' advocates and Democratic politicians, who argue it disrespects military tradition and the legacy of Black service members, especially since no US carrier has ever been named after a sitting president.

Miller, a navy cook with no formal weapons training, was credited with shooting down four to six Japanese aircraft during the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack and was awarded the Navy Cross; he died in 1943 when his ship was torpedoed. NAACP president Derrick Johnson called the potential renaming "a slap in the face" to veterans, while Arizona senator and former navy officer Mark Kelly said the carrier "shouldn't be renamed at all, let alone for Donald Trump". The US Navy and the White House both declined to comment when approached.
