- Whitmer's move signals a push for Democratic Party unity

## Summary

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer congratulated Abdul El-Sayed after he won the state's Democratic US Senate primary, publicly backing him despite having supported his rival, Representative Haley Stevens, during the contest. The move signals an effort by senior Michigan Democrats to unify the party behind El-Sayed ahead of the general election, even though his progressive platform has drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle.

El-Sayed will now face Republican Mike Rogers in November's general election. Whitmer's congratulatory message also named other primary contenders, including Jocelyn Benson, as she sought to project party unity following a divisive primary campaign that saw El-Sayed's candidacy attract scrutiny over his funding sources and rhetoric.
