Michigan’s new head coach, Kyle Whittingham, said he understands the importance of the Wolverines’ rivalry with Ohio State but stopped short of adopting the language of hostility often associated with it. His comments matter because the annual match-up is central to Michigan’s football identity and expectations of any coach in Ann Arbor.

Whittingham initially said he now dislikes Ohio State when asked about the rivalry, but described “hate” as too strong a word and emphasised respect for the Buckeyes’ programme. The 66-year-old joined Michigan after 21 seasons as Utah’s head coach, where he faced Ohio State in the 2022 Rose Bowl, a 48–45 defeat.
