Mike Judge, creator of Beavis and Butt-Head, is moving to reclaim ownership of the characters from Paramount Skydance, according to Puck News. His lawyer has notified the studio that Judge intends to exercise his termination right under US copyright law, which allows creators to reclaim rights to their work 35 years after it first appeared. This gives Judge considerable leverage, since the animated duo remains an active property, with a revived Comedy Central series running since 2022 and a new season currently in production.

The original Beavis and Butt-Head shorts aired in 1992, with the full series debuting in 1993, meaning Judge's rights could revert to him at some point in 2027. It is not the only Mike Judge property enjoying a revival, as King of the Hill also returned for a 15th season this summer. Older Beavis and Butt-Head material remains available on DVD via Amazon in the meantime.
