An FDA advisory committee has voted by a majority to recommend broader access to a group of peptides, a decision that could make it easier for pharmacies to compound and dispense these compounds to patients across the United States. Peptides are short chains of amino acids that help regulate bodily functions such as metabolism, growth and tissue repair, and some are already used in approved treatments, while others remain experimental and marketed for wellness or performance purposes. The vote matters because it could significantly widen public access to substances currently used off-label or informally by millions seeking help with weight loss, healing and longevity.

The two-day hearing examined seven peptides in total, with the panel voting to allow six of them to be compounded by pharmacies. Some peptides already form the basis of FDA-approved medications, including insulin and GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, whereas others discussed at the hearing are still under federal review and lack full regulatory approval. Experts giving evidence, including a board-certified urologist, urged the panel to weigh real-world safety data built up from years of patient use alongside the approval process.
