‘Missing’ athletics coach jailed in Morocco for sexually assaulting minor

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

English athletics coach Leon Baptiste, reported missing in Morocco over the weekend, has in fact been convicted and jailed there for sexually assaulting a minor, BBC Sport has revealed. Baptiste, a 2010 Commonwealth Games 200m gold medallist who worked as a consultant sprint coach for UK Athletics, went silent more than three months ago, leaving athletes he coached without explanation before this summer's Commonwealth Games and European Championships. Moroccan authorities have now confirmed he was arrested and prosecuted, contradicting earlier media reports that he had simply disappeared.

A source at Morocco's Ministry of Justice told the BBC that Baptiste, 41, was arrested in Marrakech in May and is serving a 10-month sentence at Al-Oudaya prison after being convicted by the local courts, describing reports of his "disappearance" as inaccurate. His departure disrupted preparations for sprinters including Charlie Dobson and Zac Shaw, with Adam Gemili and Martyn Rooney stepping in to help, before Baptiste resigned this week citing unspecified ill health. The UK Foreign Office said it was supporting a British national detained in Morocco, and Baptiste had reportedly travelled there with three other former British athletes who have since returned home.
