Missy Elliott has marked the 30th anniversary of Aaliyah’s 1996 album One in a Million, praising it as a “futuristic” and distinctive work whose sound remains influential. Her tribute highlights the album’s lasting cultural importance and Aaliyah’s continuing legacy following her death in a plane crash in 2001.

Released as Aaliyah’s second studio album, One in a Million reached No. 2 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and featured Hot 100 hits including “If Your Girl Only Knew” and “The One I Gave My Heart To”. Elliott and Timbaland wrote and produced much of the record, helping establish its innovative R&B sound; after a 2021 reissue, it reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200 for the first time.
