MLB bans using dugout iPads for AI-powered in-game strategy calls

Engadget · 1 month ago

Major League Baseball has barred teams from using dugout iPads to run generative AI tools that recommend substitutions, pitch calls or other live tactical decisions. The mid-season rule change aims to preserve decisions traditionally made by players and coaches, reflecting concern that AI could exert too much influence over the game.

The commissioner’s office reportedly issued the policy in a 11 June memo, and the rules took effect on 15 July. Sources told The Athletic that up to one-third of clubs may have used tablets in this way, but MLB found all teams compliant after its review and imposed no penalties; tablet use had already faced tighter controls following the 2021 sign-stealing scandal.
