Danielle Lee-Sharp, 39, died in hospital on Sunday after being found with apparent self-inflicted injuries in Arizona. Her death came days after she and Michael Menzie, 43, were arrested on child-abuse allegations while police searched for her missing 15-year-old son, Ryker; the case has drawn attention to the conditions in which he and his younger siblings were living.

Police records described the family’s RV as being in “deplorable” condition, with no running water and Ryker confined to a small, padlocked room. He reportedly had no bathroom access and urinated into plastic bottles; his two younger siblings, aged eight and 10, were taken into care. Ryker was found on 25 September, about three miles from home, after a tip relayed during a livestream search by YouTuber Exploring with Jim led police to him wandering in the desert with a blanket.
