Moment BMW and Audi drivers roar their engines alongside each other before one ploughs into mother and daughter, four, and kills them both
A Leeds Crown Court jury has been shown footage of two drivers revving their engines and driving away together shortly before an Audi mounted a pavement and killed Justyna Hulboj, 27, and her four-year-old daughter Lena as they walked to nursery in January 2023. Audi driver Hardeep Bhachu has admitted causing their deaths by dangerous driving, while BMW driver Jasskamal Riyat denies the same charges; prosecutors argue that his alleged participation in a race makes him equally responsible despite not colliding with anyone.
The collision happened at about 8.30am on Scott Hall Road, Leeds, after the drivers met at traffic lights and apparently discussed the power of their cars, including Bhachu’s claimed 560 brake horsepower Audi TT. Riyat admitted driving up to 50mph in a 40mph zone, using his phone while driving and undertaking other vehicles, but denies racing or driving dangerously. He says the encounter was chance and that he filmed the Audi because he expected its driver to do something reckless.
