British Olympic silver medallist Jack Beaumont intervened to defuse a dangerous confrontation on the River Thames on Sunday after a speedboat allegedly rammed a rowing boat and then targeted him. The incident, which happened near Maidenhead Rowing Club, raised serious safety concerns given the vulnerability of small rowing sculls against larger, faster vessels on a busy stretch of the river.

Beaumont, 32, who won silver in the men's quadruple sculls at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, challenged the skipper of the 18-foot speedboat, reportedly named the Mayfair Lady, after it struck another rower. Footage shows the speedboat's captain hurling abuse and appearing to reverse towards Beaumont's scull, before Beaumont skilfully manoeuvred away and drew the boat away from other, more vulnerable rowers. Thames Valley Police arrested a 67-year-old man from Windsor on suspicion of threats to kill, criminal damage, common assault and endangering others with a watercraft; he remains in custody as the investigation continues. Witnesses said the situation could have been fatal, and Maidenhead Rowing Club, founded in 1876, confirmed one of its members had been involved in a collision with another river user.
