A woman was filmed hauling two children uphill to safety in Nepal moments before a torrent of mud and water swept away a home, in dramatic footage that has emerged amid the country's ongoing flood catastrophe. The rescue highlights the scale of danger still facing communities after an unprecedented deluge of ice, rock, mud and debris struck the Nepal-Tibet border, triggered by a glacial collapse that scientists link to accelerating climate change in the Himalayas.

The wider disaster has killed more than 900 people, with around 4,250 to nearly 5,000 still missing six days on, as rescuers battle mud and debris to reach dozens of hydropower workers trapped in tunnels, aided by teams from China, India and South Korea. Hundreds of decomposing bodies have been buried in shallow graves after DNA sampling, mortuaries are overflowing, and Nepal has appealed internationally for more than a thousand freezer units. Amid the devastation there was a rare moment of hope: a six-year-old girl was pulled from the mud four days after the disaster and reunited with her family.
