Moment remorseless killer laughs as police interview him for homophobic murder of ‘true gentleman’ that was so sickening officers were stopped from looking at video evidence
A court has heard how Matthew Jonathan, 40, laughed while being interviewed by police over the homophobic murder of Jamie Gawler, 54, whom he tortured over two days at Mr Gawler's home in Hereford in January 2025. Jonathan filmed himself carrying out the sustained assaults on his mobile phone, footage described as so distressing that police officers had to be given support before viewing it, and he was jailed for 32 years at Worcester Crown Court.
Jonathan had known Mr Gawler, described as a "true gentleman", for only a month before the fatal attack. The case, in which the killer showed no remorse during police questioning, was featured in the BBC series Murder 24/7, now available on BBC iPlayer.
