More than 20 hikers and backpackers have been reported missing after flash floods tore through Arizona's Grand Canyon on Saturday afternoon, prompting a major search and evacuation effort. The missing are believed to have been on trails near Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area, with the National Park Service and Arizona Department of Public Safety working to account for everyone who may have been caught in the affected zone.

Officials said 62 people had already been evacuated from the area, while at least 20 remain unaccounted for, including those who may have been on the North Kaibab Trail, at Bright Angel Campground, or in an area known as "the Box" north of Phantom Ranch. All footbridges across Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, cutting off pedestrian crossings, and the Black and Silver bridges plus access to the Colorado River have been closed indefinitely. Videos from the scene showed mudslides sweeping through the canyon as hikers filmed from a suspended bridge above.
