More than 250,000 flee wildfires in France and Spain
More than 250,000 people have been evacuated as wildfires continue to burn in south-western France and Spain, driven by strong winds and high temperatures. The fires have forced major emergency responses, threatened areas near Bordeaux and Madrid, and disrupted events including the final stage of the Tour de France.
About 200,000 people have left parts of France’s Gironde and Landes regions, where around 30 fires are burning and the military has been deployed to help create firebreaks. In Spain, a state of emergency has been declared; improved weather has aided firefighting near Madrid, but one man in his 70s was found dead in his car near València.
