A newborn baby was found dead in a rubbish bin in Auburn, Sydney, in August, prompting police to launch a search for the child's mother. More than three weeks later, a 24-year-old woman believed to be the infant's mother was identified and arrested after being assessed at hospital. The discovery has prompted criminal proceedings, with the woman remaining in custody and facing charges.

The boy was discovered unclothed inside a rubbish bag on 31 August by a local resident at an apartment block on Harrow Road. Police believed the baby had been in the bin for up to 36 hours. The woman was arrested on Thursday evening following her hospital assessment and taken to Auburn Police Station, where she remains in custody pending charges.
