## Summary

A mother and daughter have died after a suspected grizzly bear attack near Bella Coola in British Columbia, after failing to return from a short walk. Their deaths have prompted conservation officers to search for any bears involved and assess the risk to public safety.

Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and Selah Reed, 20, were reported missing on 1 November; search teams found their remains on Monday and Tuesday. Officials have not established whether one or more bears were involved, and say any bear found responsible would be killed under provincial guidelines. British Columbia is estimated to have 10,000 to 13,000 grizzlies, and the province has seen other bear attacks in recent years.
