A 19-year-old woman, Takiyah Babers, has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her four-month-old daughter, Luna, after allegedly placing the infant in a Los Angeles dumpster. The baby's body was discovered on the evening of 28 September by a neighbour searching for recyclables. Babers is being held on $2 million bail whilst the Los Angeles Police Department investigation continues.

The infant was found in a laundry bag inside a dumpster on Alba Street, approximately 4.5 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. When discovered by the baby's body, paramedics rushed Luna to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Babers initially told her foster father the baby was asleep before changing her account and claiming the infant was with the baby's father. A vigil has since been held at the dumpster site, which is now decorated with candles, flowers, balloons and photographs in Luna's memory. Family members have expressed devastation over the incident, with Babers's foster mother stating the whole household is grieving.
