Jane Coates, the mother of Lucy Harrison, travelled to Texas to demand a fresh investigation into her 23-year-old daughter's death. Lucy, a fashion buyer from Warrington, was shot in the chest on 10 January 2025 by her father Kris Harrison at his home in Prosper, Texas; he claimed the gun accidentally discharged whilst he was showing it to her. Although a Texas grand jury ruled the death an accident and declined to indict him, a UK coroner concluded it was an unlawful killing, creating a significant discrepancy in how the two jurisdictions assessed the case. Ms Coates's pursuit of a fresh investigation matters because the initial inquiry appears to have had substantial gaps in procedure and evidence-gathering.

Ms Coates has identified several critical investigative failures, including the absence of toxicology tests despite officers detecting alcohol on her father at the time, no gunshot residue testing, inconsistencies in her father's account, and questions about the bullet's trajectory and entry wound. Her concerns have been validated by Craig Miller, a respected former Dallas police chief, who reviewed the case files and concluded that investigators departed from nationally accepted "best practice" in homicide investigations. Ms Coates has travelled over 4,000 miles to the Collin County District Attorney's Office to meet with prosecutors, but her repeated requests for meetings with both Prosper Police and the District Attorney's Office have been declined. She remains determined to secure a proper investigation, stating that the fundamental gaps in the original inquiry mean the case warrants reopening.
