Motorola’s GrapheneOS phones will launch in 2027 priced higher than Pixels

Ars Technica · 3 hours ago

Motorola and the GrapheneOS project have confirmed that phones running the privacy-focused operating system are on track to launch in 2027, expanding the software beyond Google's Pixel range for the first time. The devices won't ship with GrapheneOS pre-installed but will receive full official support from the project, with Motorola's backing. This matters because GrapheneOS has strict hardware security requirements that, until now, only Pixel phones' Tensor chips could meet, so bringing a second manufacturer on board significantly broadens the OS's appeal for privacy- and security-conscious users.

The GrapheneOS team says the Motorola devices will be premium flagships priced even higher than Pixels, whose current lineup starts at $900 and rises to $1,300 for the Pixel 11 Pro XL, meaning the new phones will likely cost well over $1,000. Only Qualcomm's most expensive 8-series chips offer comparable security to Google's Tensor processors, ruling out Motorola's budget Moto G line and pointing towards its recent foldable flagships as the likely candidates. Motorola hasn't confirmed a release date, and cheaper models remain unlikely any time soon since Motorola currently offers only limited software update support on its lower-cost phones.

  • Motorola's GrapheneOS phones confirmed for 2027 launch
  • Pricing expected to exceed even Pixel's $900–$1,300 range
  • Likely to be premium flagships, possibly foldables, not budget models
