- Officials warn that turning back can be essential in the mountains.

## Summary

Two German mountaineers are under police investigation after allegedly leaving a struggling companion at about 8,500 feet on Austria’s Hochkönig mountain and continuing to the summit. The man was rescued, but a mountain rescue official said he probably would not have survived the night in the severe weather.

The three climbers had set out on the Königsjodler trail despite a poor forecast and a warning from another climber. Rescue workers spent 14 hours reaching the exhausted man amid heavy snowfall, around 20 centimetres of snow and poor visibility. Officials said the incident showed how overconfidence and poor planning can quickly create life-threatening conditions.
