MTG 2027 includes Kamigawa: Titanbreach, a huge Ikoria crossover war

Polygon · 1 month ago

Wizards of the Coast has announced that Magic: The Gathering's flagship June 2027 set will be Kamigawa: Titanbreach, returning to the beloved Japanese mythology-inspired plane rather than continuing the recent run of "Universes Beyond" crossovers (such as Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy and Marvel Super Heroes). The set's central story sees the plane of Ikoria, home to giant kaiju-like monsters, launching an all-out invasion of Kamigawa, pitting its creatures and their bonders against Kamigawa's mech pilots. The announcement matters to fans as a return to an original, fan-favourite setting after several years dominated by licensed crossover sets.

The news was revealed at a MagicCon: Amsterdam preview panel, with details given by Magic's director of communications Blake Rasmussen and vice-president of creative Jackie Jones. Kamigawa previously featured in 2004's Champions of Kamigawa and its sequels, then received a cyberpunk update in 2022's Neon Dynasty, before being damaged in the Phyrexian invasion of March of the Machine (2023). The exact cause of the Ikoria invasion remains unconfirmed, though Wizards hinted it may connect to the separate upcoming Reality Breach set, which follows the planeswalker Jace's attempt to reshape the multiverse, potentially tying into a wider ongoing story arc that began with 2023's Wilds of Eldraine.
