Muchova beats Gauff in epic tie-break to reach final

BBC Sport · 1 month ago

Karolina Muchova reached her first Wimbledon final by beating Coco Gauff in a dramatic semi-final on Centre Court, winning 6-2 1-6 7-6 (12-10) after saving a match point in a gripping deciding tie-break. The result marks a significant milestone for the Czech 10th seed, who had reached four major semi-finals before but only once made a Grand Slam final, losing the 2023 French Open to Iga Swiatek.

Muchova took the first set comfortably before Gauff, the seventh seed and a two-time Grand Slam champion, fought back to level the match. The pair traded blows in a tense third set that went to a tie-break, where Gauff recovered from 4-1 down and held a match point on serve, only to net a forehand. After two hours and 35 minutes in sweltering conditions, Muchova prevailed and will face either compatriot Linda Noskova or Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk in Saturday's final. She is the third Czech woman in three years to reach the Wimbledon final.
