The trial began in Ensenada, Mexico, for three men accused of murdering Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad, who were shot dead during a surfing trip to Baja California in April 2024. The killings, allegedly carried out to steal the victims' pick-up truck, phones and tyres, caused widespread shock in Australia and the US and prompted a major social media search effort before the men's bodies were found dumped in a clifftop shaft. The Robinsons' parents, Martin and Debra, attended the opening of proceedings, with Debra reportedly staring down the accused in court as they sought answers about their sons' deaths.

Jake, 30, and Callum, 33, were camping on a remote beach with 30-year-old Rhoad when they were attacked and shot in the head. The girlfriend of one defendant, Ary Gisell Silva, was jailed for 20 years last year after admitting she incited the robbery, telling accomplices the surfers had "good phones and good tyres". Baja California is known for high levels of organised crime, and the case echoes the 2015 murders of two other Australian surfers, Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, in the neighbouring state of Sinaloa.
