Murky pond will cost £100k for full restoration
A pond at Saumarez Park in Guernsey covered in green algae will cost more than £100,000 to fully restore, according to the island's Natural Environment director, who said simple fixes would not be enough to resolve the problem. Islanders were first warned in 2022 against letting pets swim in or drink from the pond because of high algae levels, and an expert recently said the situation had worsened, urging the States to act quickly.
Director Jim Robinson said recent rain would ease the immediate problem but that a full restoration, involving dredging silt, improving drainage and installing aeration devices, would cost over £100,000 and divert funds from other services. He noted that States budgets for the park have faced real-term cuts in recent years, including a significant reduction in 2026, meaning measures such as refilling the pond or asking visitors not to feed the ducks would not be sufficient on their own.

- Simple fixes like refilling or not feeding ducks won't work
- Budget cuts mean full restoration would hit other park services
