Leeds woman says neighbour’s demolition left her home damaged and hard to sell
Shivarna Mitra says her home in Pudsey, Leeds, has been badly damaged since her neighbour demolished his half of their semi-detached house. She says holes in the walls and roof have led to leaks, damp and mould, pests and damage to the electrics, leaving the property potentially unsafe and difficult to sell.
Mitra bought the three-bedroom house for £217,000 in May 2021 and says she spent a further £80,000 renovating it. The neighbour, Chris Rhodes, denies his building work caused the damage; the council served a stop notice months after work began. Rhodes later sold the plot, which had planning permission, for £115,000, but Mitra says the new owners have not cooperated and she cannot access their land to carry out repairs. She also says high heating costs and the effects on her family’s health have added to the strain.
