Mystery voicemail scam can hit without your phone ever ringing
A reader-submitted case highlights a scam in which victims receive repeated voicemail notifications without their phone ever ringing, often from constantly changing numbers, with messages that contain no audio when played. Fox News's "CyberGuy" Kurt Knutsson explains that while this pattern shows the hallmarks of automated spam, it does not necessarily mean scammers are using specialised "ringless voicemail" technology, since call-screening features, carrier spam filters and other legitimate factors can also produce silent, unringing voicemails.
The example cited involves Mike from Westport, Connecticut, who reported receiving voicemails every 20 to 30 minutes despite his phone never ringing; blocking one number simply caused the calls to resume from a new one, and the messages contained no discernible audio. Knutsson notes that such campaigns are designed to prompt recipients to call back, potentially exposing them to premium-rate charges or further scam attempts, and advises caution rather than assuming a single explanation for the strange voicemails.
- Silent voicemails can arrive without your phone ringing at all.
- Scammers may use ever-changing numbers to evade call blocking.
- Not all such voicemails involve special "ringless" scam technology.
