## Key points

- Pelosi called the two Democrats’ comments about Israel wrong.
- Mamdani supports Israel with equal rights but not as a Jewish state.
- Pelosi said their views do not represent congressional Democrats.

## Summary

Nancy Pelosi called past comments by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed about Israel “wrong” and said they did not represent congressional Democrats. She said she hoped Mamdani would succeed as mayor, while disagreeing with some of his views.

Mamdani has said he supports Israel as a state with equal rights but would not endorse it as a Jewish state. El-Sayed has also declined to affirm Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, saying he struggled with the question. Pelosi said House Democrats would distance themselves from such remarks and argued they did not reflect the party’s consensus; a Jewish community leader criticised her for appearing to understate antisemitism within the party.
