NASA wires up Dragonfly and names the landing area

NASA has fitted a wiring harness to its Dragonfly rotorcraft and secured official naming of its intended landing site on Titan, marking two milestones as the mission progresses towards a planned July 2028 launch. Saturn's largest moon has long fascinated scientists for its thick atmosphere and organic chemistry, and Dragonfly is designed to spend years exploring terrain thought to hold clues about the ingredients for life, making these engineering and naming steps significant markers of progress towards that goal.

The newly approved name, Ahmakiq Undae, designates the dune field where the nuclear-powered craft is due to touch down in late 2034, following its arrival at Titan after launch. The wiring harness alone runs to roughly 17,315 feet of conductor wire with 374 connectors and weighs about 100 pounds, paired with a nearly 300-pound battery; the fuselage measures almost 13 feet and will carry eight sets of rotors. Unlike ESA's Huygens probe, which lasted just over an hour on Titan's surface in 2005, Dragonfly is intended to operate for at least 3.3 years, visiting sites including Selk Crater. The mission's lifecycle cost has risen to $3.35 billion, roughly double original estimates, with the launch running more than two years behind schedule.
