National Television Awards pick first all-female shortlist for drama acting award
The National Television Awards have named an all-female shortlist for best drama performance for the first time, with voters selecting five actresses from a longlist that included male stars such as David Tennant, Gary Oldman and Idris Elba. The move marks a notable shift for the long-running ceremony, which recognises the best in British television over the past year, as it opens a second round of public voting across its 15 categories.
The nominees are Sheridan Smith for I Fought The Law, Ruth Jones for Run Away, Vicky McClure for Trigger Point, Ella Bruccoleri for The Other Bennet Sister and Judy Parfitt for Call The Midwife. Elsewhere, Stacey Solomon has three nominations, including best TV presenter against Ant and Dec, Sir David Attenborough, Claudia Winkleman and Alison Hammond, while Mrs Brown's Boys is up for best comedy. Voting closes at midday on 8 September, when the ceremony, hosted by Joel Dommett, will be broadcast live from London's O2 arena on ITV1 and ITVX.
